What is Seedstock Plus?

Seedstock Plus, LLC is one of the largest full-service Seedstock providers in the United States, marketing approximately 1,100 bulls and 1,500 females each year.  In 2005, Seedstock Plus clientele included 468 customers in 26 states.

Seedstock Plus is also the largest supplier of Balancer (Gelbvieh X Angus) genetics in the nation.  In addition, Seedstock Plus offers purebred black Angus, Red Angus and Gelbvieh.

How is it different from other Seedstock providers?

Seedstock Plus is a cooperative of independent seedstock producers, rather than an organization representing a single herd of cows, or multiple herds using the same genetics. Collectively, the individual herds that comprise Seedstock Plus can offer customers more genetic breadth and options.

Seedstock Plus members offer their entire weaning crop to the organization for selection. Bulls selected are then developed at one of six regional Seedstock Plus performance-testing facilities. Based on strict requirements for performance, pedigree, Expected Progeny Differences, structural soundness and overall conformation, 15-20% of these bulls will be culled at the end of these regional performance tests. In this manner, bulls are not only developed and performance-tested, they are also acclimated on a regional basis.

How Many Different members are there?

Currently, Seedstock Plus is comprised of 65 members (independent seedstock herds) in 17 states.

Are members really just cooperator herds for a single supplier?

No. One of the advantages of Seedstock Plus is the genetic depth and breadth that comes from the unique development of each member herd. This genetic diversity, distilled with common goals and bull development protocol results in a variety of consistent, predictable genetics from which customers can choose.

What breeds and composites are offered?

Seedstock Plus offers purebred Angus, Red Angus, Gelbvieh, along with Balancer (Gelbvieh X Angus) genetics. All bulls sold through Seedstock Plus are registered through: American Angus Association, American Gelbvieh Association or the Red Angus Association of America.

How are the bulls developed, specifically?

First of all, Seedstock Plus bulls are developed at one of the organization’s six regional testing facilities. Rations at each of these are designed for growth and the expression of genetic potential without the stress that often accompanies high-concentrate rations. Each of the facilities is designed so that bulls must exercise. On both counts, when bulls leave these test facilities for market they are ready to go to work, not melt down.

Prior to being marketed, bulls that make the sort must also pass a semen test and Breeding Soundness Examination. As well, all Seedstock Plus bulls sold at auction are scanned by ultrasound for ribeye size, external fat and marbling.  They are also screened  and tested negative for PI BVD.

How do I receive a catalog?

What kind of guarantee comes with the bull?

All Seedstock Plus bulls are warrantied for the first breeding season (six months) for any failure due to fertility, disposition or structure.

Additionally, Seedstock Plus subsidizes a comprehensive replacement program which buyers can purchase for 4% of the bull price. Seedstock Plus will replace that bull if anything happens to him including injury or death.

How do you replace bulls?

If any bull we sell fails during the first breeding season, due to fertility, structure or disposition, we’ll send you a bull of equal value (including the necessary vaccination or testing needed for your area). You just take the bull that failed to the local market and send us the check. Another option, if preferred by the customer, is to receive the purchase price of the bull as credit toward the purchase of another Seedstock Plus bull.

Is delivery free?

Yes. Whether you buy one head or 100, we offer free delivery anywhere in the Continental United States.

What about the guaranteed sight-unseen purchasing I’ve heard about?

You tell us what bulls you’re interested in, or what performance criteria you have, how many bulls you need, and how much you will spend for the bull. If Seedstock Plus sends you a bull and you don’t like him, just load him on the trailer and send him back, no cost to you and no questions asked. Typically buyers using this service tell us they get more bull than they expected for less money than they had allocated.

What marketing help do you provide?

Seedstock Plus has developed an extensive list of feedlot and order buyer contacts who like how calves sired by Seedstock Plus genetics work for them. As such, when our customers let us know they have calves to market, we can usually secure them extra bids through our Marketing Assistance Program, which is offered as a free service.

As well, we participate in a number of industry-leading marketing programs, such as Superior Video and  Cargill Cattle Feeders’ (formerly known as Caprock Cattle Feeders) Sharing Total Added Value alliance (STAV) program. We also own shares in the innovative new Profit Partners program. And, we still hold shares in the Iowa Quality Beef program, which was a boon to our customers in the Corn Belt, though that company has suspended operation for the time being.

For the same reasons feedlots want calves produced with Seedstock Plus genetics—performance, predictability, consistency and mainstream market conformance—a growing number of commercial producers want them in their own herds. Using the same stringent criteria utilized for bull selection, Seedstock Plus markets mature females and bred heifers provided by Seedstock Plus members and users of Seedstock Plus genetics. Increased demand for these females was evident in last year’s sales—the second year Seedstock Plus has marketed females—as the average price was $150 higher than other similar-aged females selling in the same geographic region.

What do your regional coordinators do?

Seedstock Plus is fortunate to have six regional coordinators—part of the organization’s membership—who serve as additional field staff for the organization. Regionally, they best know the demands and challenges of commercial producers in their areas. Besides coordinating bull marketing and delivery in their regions, these coordinators can also evaluate the herds of potential clients and help them match Seedstock Plus genetics to their needs.
